CHAPTER ELEVEN

The captain’s quarters were spacious enough, kitted out with a large wooden table, two luxurious velvet sofas, and a stained oak desk where the captain could conduct her important pirate business affairs. But even with all of its comforts, Rainbow Dash was beginning to feel cramped. Captain Celaeno, Mullet, and Rainbow Dash had been cooped up inside for hours, charting a course into the Thunder Jungle that might inflict the least amount of damage to the ship.

“If we come at it from above, maybe we can lower the ship down fast—like a load of cargo onto a dock?” Mullet suggested. “Rainbow Dash, what do ye think?”

“Yeah, that could work. . . .” Rainbow Dash replied, not even knowing what the question had been. It was difficult for Rainbow Dash to pay attention when she still had no clue what had become of Daring Do after her encounter with Brumby Cloverpatch. Daring Do had told her she’d be right behind them, and flying to catch up should have been a breeze for her. Unless her bad wing was acting up again? Maybe that was it. Or perhaps once she’d gotten to visiting with her old pal Brumby, the two of them lost track of time. Rainbow Dash tried to tell herself that it was a tangible reason, but something in the pit of her stomach was telling her otherwise.

Rainbow Dash didn’t think the Good Fortune Garnet was worth putting a friend in danger. But Daring Do wasn’t any normal friend. She’d faced even more dangers than Rainbow Dash. Daring Do would be just fine… right? Rainbow Dash looked at Brumby’s intricate map on the table and marveled at the various details that had been left out of the version she’d drawn in school.

“You all right, Rainbow Dash?” Celaeno asked with genuine concern in her voice. “You seem down. Was it because of dinner? I’m really sorry about that. . . .” It had been Squabble’s turn to prepare the meal since Lix Spittle had the day off. Instead of making a hearty potato stew like usual, he’d decided to get creative and make his special “birdseed casserole.” It was basically gruel with burnt birdseed crusted on top. Rainbow Dash had only managed one bite before giving up and sharing her last pasta-and-potato sandwich with the others when Squabble wasn’t looking. But that wasn’t what was bothering her.

She had much bigger concerns on her mind. Rainbow Dash had to find out what had happened to her friend.

“Oh no,” Rainbow Dash insisted. “I’m fine, really. I’m just feeling a bit cramped. Maybe I just need a wing stretch?” She yawned, stood up, and trotted to the door. “I’m gonna go fly alongside the ship for a while.”

Captain Celaeno acknowledged her with a nod and turned her attention back to the map on the table. Rainbow Dash could hear her cursing the fact that there was no X to mark the spot. After they’d found the Thunder Jungle and landed, how were they to locate the garnet? It would basically be like flying blind.
